.Transistors - Bipolar (BJT) - SingleThe 2N4403TA is a device classified as NPN digital switch that can act as an amplifier or as a digital switch. This device is used in a variety of applications, primarily in digital systems and power supplies. With its gain of 125, it is capable of switching a high current load and is intended to be used as a low power output driver.The 2N4403TA consists of three regions: the base, the emitter, and the collector. It is a NPN bipolar junction transistor which means that the emitter is connected to the negative side of the power source and the collector is connected to the positive side. The base is the region used for controlling the flow of current. There is also a voltage divider network of two resistors connected between the collector and a fixed reference voltage. A NPN transistor acts as a switch in two states: cut-off and saturation. When a small current enters the base which turns the transistor “on”, then the collector current flows through to the emitter. If the base current is increased further, then the collector current increases proportionately. As the current draws more current from the base, the transistor moves from being in saturation to cut-off. To switch the transistor back “off”, the base current needs to be removed.From this, we can see that the 2N4403TA is used as an amplifier or a switch depending on the base current levels. In an amplifier mode, it is used to amplify a signal and increase the power of the output. When used as a switch, it can control the flow of current, switch between different voltage levels or quickly switch the output of the digital system.For electrical stability, the 2N4403TA should be biased at the voltage divider to let the transistor move off from a higher to a lower power level without causing instability.
