2N5458 Application Field and Working Principle

JFET (Junction Field Effect Transistor) is a type of transistor with a major constituent part being PN junction; they are referred to as depletion-mode transistors due to the inherent concentration-dependent junction bias. These transistors normally act as voltage-controlled resistors and can be used in linear amplifiers as an input stage, as well as audio-frequency amplifiers.

The 2N5458 is an N-Channel JFET, which belongs to the family of FET transistors mentioned above. It is available in the TO-18 packages and has superior thermal performance, making it a suitable choice for applications that require a wide temperature range from -55 to 200 degrees Celsius.

This type of transistor is mainly used in pre-amplifier, low noise amplifier, voltage regulator, circuit tuning, digital-to-analog (DAC) converter, and feedthrough applications.

Working Principle

Working principle of JFETs is similar to that of bipolar transistors. The JFETs operate by the effect of applied electric field between the drain and the source. When an electric field is applied between the gate and the substrate, it will alter the shape of the depletion region around the gate-source junction, consequently changing the conductivity of the channel.

A 2N5458 specifically works by the control of gate bias, which controls the resistance across the source and drain. When we increase gate voltage, conductivity increases between source and drain and resistance diminishes. At negative bias, the opposite effect takes place and resistance increases to cause a reduction of current.

This type of JFET is specially known for its low noise performance, good linearity and high gain. It is also used in noise cancelling circuits as it helps to suppress noise and other unrequired signals.
