The BD136 is a single bipolar junction transistor, one of a wide range of discrete transistors used in amplifier and switching circuits. As with most transistors, there are two different types of BD136 – NPN and PNP – which differ by their design and function. Both types feature a three-terminal design and are used to regulate current flow through a circuit, allowing for complex switching or protection functions.
The BD136 is a medium-power device capable of operating at up to 800 mA (milliamps) and designed for frequencies ranging from DC up to 300 MHz. Useful for both low- and high-frequency signal processing, this transistor is able to switch at signal speeds up to 1 Gb/s. The BD136 is useful not only in digital signal applications, but also in audio, telecommunication, and industrial control systems.
Applications of the BD136 typically include discrete low-noise amplifiers, automotive switching, digital audio equipment, power supplies, and switching circuits where high power operation is needed. In audio applications, the BD136 is used to amplify signals to a squashing distortion level where the signal converter can be driven effectively. High order filters can be built using the BD136, leading to improved signal performance.
The working principle of the BD136 is based on the nature of the semiconductor material used in its construction. At room temperature, the silicon or germanium material used to construct the transistor acts as a near perfect insulator, allowing no current to flow through. Applying a sufficient voltage to one of the three pins (known as the Emitter-Base-Collector pins) surrounding the material conducts electricity, allowing current to flow and allowing the transistor to amplify a signal. The BD136 works by altering the current flow from the Emitter pin to the Collector pin, using a smaller Emitter-Base current to control a much larger Collector-Base current.
The BD136 single bipolar junction transistor is a versatile device capable of operating at frequencies up to 300 MHz and suitable for a wide range of low and high frequency applications. Amplification and switching applications in particular can benefit from the BD136\'s high power operation of up to 800 mA, enabling improved signal performance and distortion levels.
