The FDP8896 is a single high-side MOSFET driver that is designed for controlling inductive loads such as relays and solenoids in industrial applications. It is an improved version of the existing FDP7790 MOSFET driver, with additional features such as clamp diodes, under voltage lockout, and adjustable dead time enabling it to effectively manage inductive loads to reduce power consumption and prolong the life of the device and its related electronic system.

The FDP8896 works by providing power to the load, such as a relay, while also providing protection of both the device and the load by monitoring the load current, shutoff the power to the load if the current limit is exceeded, and providing thermal shutdown to protect the device from overheating. This is accomplished through two key components: a MOSFET driver and a power MOSFET. The MOSFET driver converts the parallel logic signal into a high-current drive output to power the MOSFET. The power MOSFET acts as a switch to control the power supplied to the load.

The MOSFET driver is composed of two stages: a high-side driver and a gate driver. The gate driver provides current to the power MOSFET gate, while the high-side driver is responsible for supplying the load current. The gate driver’s input logic levels are designed to interface to both standard logic devices, as well as high-voltage logic devices. The driver also features an adjustable dead time, allowing it to be configured for both fast and slow switching applications.

The power MOSFET is connected between the load and the driver’s output and is used to control the power to the load. It operates as a switch, turning the load on and off as commanded by the driver. To prevent power supply overvoltages, the MOSFET is also equipped with clamp diodes, which clamp the MOSFET output to the negative supply when the MOSFET is turned off. Additionally, the FDP8896 includes over-current protection and thermal shutdown protection, to prevent excessive current from damaging the device and/or the load.

The FDP8896 is ideal for controlling inductive loads in industrial applications, such as automotive and HVAC systems, as well as for general purpose switching applications. Due to its features such as under voltage lockout, adjustable dead time and power MOSFET protection, it offers improved performance, higher reliability, improved system cost, and extended device life.
