A positive gate-to-source voltage (VGS) is applied, which acts as a source of electrons, allowing them to flow from the source to the drain. This creates a linear, constant current flow from the drain to the source. The drain current, Id, is now determined by the voltage applied across the drain and source.

The linear mode is the combination of the enhancement mode and the depletion mode, working in tandem. Here, the IXFC80N08 operates in a region where the drain current, Id, is proportional to both VGS and Vds .
