JAN2N918 is a single NPN bipolar junction transistor (BJT) device, widely used in various applications. It works on the principle of bipolar junction transistors, i.e. current-voltage (I-V) characteristics, in order to provide effective switching and control of current flow.

Structure

JAN2N918 contains 4 terminals. The three primary ones are the base, collector and emitter. It has a PN junction made of two pieces of N-type semiconductor materials. The N-type layer has electrons as majority carriers, hence is held negatively. A small potential applied on the base with respect to the emitter, controls the flow of electrons from the emitter to the collector. As the size of the potential changes, so does the current flow through the collector.

Operation Mode

JAN2N918 works in two different modes – active and saturation. In active mode, the base voltage is more than the emitter voltage, so there is sufficient junction field to keep the electrons moving into the collector. In saturation mode, the opposite applies and the electron flow is much stronger. It is often used as an amplifier or as a switch to control electric current.
