Working Principle

The UNR221M00L is an NPN (Negative-Positive-Negative) BJT. It consists of three layers of semiconductor materials, one made of repelling electrons (N-type), sandwiched between two layers of attracting electrons (P-type). In this case, the N-type layer is the emitter, the P-type layer is the base, and the other N-type layer is the collector.

When a current is applied to the emitter (the N-type layer on the outside, with the P-type layer in the middle), electrons from the emitter travel through the middle P-type layer and combine with the protons in the layer, forming holes in the layer. This creates an area of increased positive charge near the base. This increased positive charge in the base attracts the electrons from the collector layer to it, creating a current between the collector and the emitter.

The current in the NPN BJT depends on the voltage applied to the base. Higher voltages create more current from the collector to the emitter than lower voltages, while still allowing the same voltage to be applied to the collector and the emitter. The current is also dependant on the size of the gap between the emitter and base, and can be manipulated to increase or decrease current in the circuit.
