2N6788 is a type of Field-Effect Transistor (FET) belonging to Metal-Oxide Semiconductor FET (MOSFET) family. In theory, a FET is a voltage-controlled switch. When the voltage applied across its gate is below a certain level, it is said to be "off" and no current will flow between the source and drain. However, when the voltage is increased to a point above the threshold, the FET is said to be "on" and it will allow the current to flow between the source and drain. This allows the user to control the amount of current flowing through the transistor, as well as the direction of the current flow. For example, if the Gate voltage is increased, the current will flow from the Drain to the Source, and vice versa.
