Working Principle

The AO4459 provides an integrated gate driver solution for a single high-side power MOSFET controlled by a logic-level PWM input. With short-circuit protection circuitry, this driver minimizes the external components used in a power MOSFET gate drive circuit. The core of the AO4459 is a dual-channel MOSFET driver which provides gate drive current to two high-side MOSFETs. This dual-channel driver also provides a level shift circuit, which can supply up to -18V for driving low-side MOSFETs.

The driver includes a voltage supervisor, which turns off the gate drive if the voltage on the lower voltage (LV) pin drops below the low voltage set threshold. The MUXOUT output turns OFF the gate drive if an over-current or over-temperature fault is detected. A fault flag is also output whenever the fault condition is detected.

The AO4459 further integrates a protection circuit which monitors the value of load current. The load current is monitored by a separate monitoring IC, which transmits the current information to the main driver IC. With the load current monitoring feature, the main driver IC can adjust the shoot-through protection level to prevent the load current from exceeding the specified upper limit.
