The IXTA3N120 is a type of Field-Effect Transistor (FET), more specifically an Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) with a maximum collector-emitter voltage of 1200V. It offers significant benefits over the more commonly used BJTs, such as higher frequency operation, greater power density, and improved efficiency.

To turn the transistor off, the voltage applied to the gate terminal is reversed, causing the electric field to be reversed and suppressing current carriers from further entering the channel. This reduces current flow and stops the transistor from conducting any current.
Besides the switching capabilities, IXTA3N120 offers improved heat-sink mounting and a low-inductance design that can improve the bandwidth of the transistor. The IXTA3N120 is encapsulated in a UL94-V0 ceramic package that provides good electrical and thermal insulation and allows for easy mounting.
The IXTA3N120 has a maximum operating temperature of 125°C, which gives it an advantage over other IGBTs operating at higher temperatures. It is also equipped with temperature and current sensors, to help protect itself from damage due to over-temperature and over-current conditions.
