The FDMS8690 is a commonly used single-ended P-channel MOSFET (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor) that is readily available in the electrical engineering market. The device has a wide range of applications across many industries, and its compact size and low on-resistance makes it well suited for use in high-temperature, high-current environments. It is capable of handling up to 49A of continuous current and 62A of pulse or peak current.

The FDMS8690 MOSFET is a specially designed device that is constructed from four distinct parts. Firstly, the Drain and Source pins create the FET’s main electrical connection to the power supply or load, respectively. The Gate pin is the third contact, and is used to control the flow of current between the Drain and Source pins, while the fourth pin, the Body or Substrate pin, is the electrical connection between the body and substrate of the device.

The basic working principle of an n-channel MOSFET is that it acts as an “on/off” switch; when the Gate voltage exceeds a certain level, often known as the “threshold voltage”, the transistor passes current between Drain and Source. Depending on the type of MOSFET, a higher Gate voltage will increase the current passing through the channel, while a lower voltage will reduce it. Once the Gate voltage falls below the threshold voltage, the MOSFET becomes an “off” state, effectively blocking the current from passing between the Drain and Source.

The FDMS8690 is a particularly useful single-ended P-channel MOSFET that is used in a wide variety of applications. It is commonly used in power supplies, automotive and industrial heating applications, UPS systems and DC-DC converters.
