The STFI13N95K3 is a power Field-Effect Transistor (FET) of the N-channel variety. As such, it is primarily used as a switch, as it can go from a low-resistance (a closed switch) to a high-resistance (an open switch). In addition to switching, it can also be used for current control and for feedback and control circuits. It is made out of Silicon and is typically used in wires, electronic and automotive applications.
The STFI13N95K3 is often seen as an upgrade of earlier FET designs. It has an improved gate charge, which improves the switching speed and reduces switching losses; its high-current capability makes it ideal for applications where there is a large current flow; and its low noise capabilities make it good for applications where noise must be kept to a minimum.
The STFI13N95K3 is an N-channel FET, and as such, the voltage difference between the Drain (the signal output) and the Source (the signal input) is what actually controls most of its behavior. As the voltage difference (the Drain-Source voltage, or VDS) is made larger, the FET begins to open up and will start to allow current to flow through it. This is due to the electrons in the channel being attracted to the Drain side of the FET, as they are negatively charged while the Drain is positively charged.
The STFI13N95K3 has two distinct modes of operation. The first is Enhancement Mode, which is the more common of the two, and which is the mode usually set by default. In Enhancement Mode, the FET is closed until its Gate Voltage (VGS) is increased to a certain point, at which point it will open up and allow current to pass through it. This mode is usually used for high-speed switching, current control, and/or feedback and control circuits.
The other mode of operation is Depletion Mode. In this mode, the FET is continually open, and VGS is used to control the amount of current that is allowed to flow through it. This mode is generally used in applications that require precise control of current, such as power supply regulation and motor control.
The STFI13N95K3 can be used in a variety of applications, ranging from switching and current control to feedback and control circuits. It is a versatile and reliable component, and its improved gate charge, high-current capabilities, and low noise output make it a popular choice for many different applications.
