The working principle of the IRF1407S is based on the MOSFET technology. MOSFET stands for "metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor." A MOSFET is a transistor that uses silicon semiconductor material as its switching material. The French-named MOSFET is a voltage-controlled device that uses an insulated gate terminal to control the shape and size of the resulting electric field.

Inside the device, a P-type region is sandwiched between two N-type regions. The insulated gate terminal is then used to control the electron and hole charge density within the P-region. When the gate is positively charged, majority carriers of the P-type reduce their density, which effectively reduces the P-region\'s resistance. This allows current to move between the source and drain terminals, resulting in a low-resistance "on" state. When the gate is not charged, the P-type region returns to a high-resistance "off" state.

Because of its high switching speed, low gate charge, and low threshold voltage, the IRF1407S is ideal for numerous power switching applications. It can be used to switch large currents and voltages at high switching frequencies. This makes the device particularly useful for high-power applications, such as power converters and motor control systems. In addition, the IRF1407S has a low threshold voltage—2.5 V—which makes it particularly useful for switching circuits that require low gate threshold voltages to enable efficient switching.
