The saturation mode is characterized by a high drain current flowing through the transistor. This happens when the gate voltage is above the threshold voltage, causing the transistor to become in effect a low resistance connection between the source and the drain. This allows the maximum possible current flow through the transistor.

Linear/Ohmic Mode

The linear/Ohmic mode is characterized by a steady current flow through the transistor based on the gate voltage. This happens when the input voltage applied to the gate is between the threshold voltage and the pinch-off voltage. The current is directly proportional to the gate-source voltage.
