The IRL520 is a logic-level power MOSFET that is able to be driven directly with a logic signal. This type of MOSFET is referred to as a Single FET, because it only has one source, drain and gate. This type of FET is mainly used to control the switching of an LED, a motor, a relay or a high-voltage circuit.

The IRL520 has a drain-source voltage (VDS) maximum of 15V, making it a suitable choice for medium- to low-power switching applications. It has an acceptable gate-source voltage of between 3.3V and 5V and a maximum current of 2A, which makes it suitable for driving a range of loads. Its low on-resistance of only 5 mΩ ensures efficient power dissipation, even at higher load currents.

The electrical properties of the IRL520 make it an excellent choice for a variety of applications, such as driving relays, controlling small DC motors, and switching power transistors. Additionally, the IRL520 can be used for voltage level conversion, as well as for driving large capacitive loads such as LED modules.

The working principle of the IRL520 is fairly simple. When the gate is driven with a logic signal (usually 0-5V), it modulates the channel resistance between the source and the drain. This, in turn, allows current to flow through the channel, and the load will be switched on or off depending on the logic level.

For example, when the gate-source voltage is 5V (Logic 1), the resistance between the source and drain is low and current can flow. In comparison, when the gate-source voltage is 0V (Logic 0), the resistance between the source and drain is high, and thus no current can flow.

The IRL520 is a popular device for switching medium to low power applications. Its low on-resistance, low gate-source voltage threshold, and moderate current capability make it an optimal choice for many applications. Additionally, its logic-level rating allows for direct drive from digital signals with no additional circuitry.
