The BSS138TA, also known as the Enhancement Mode MOSFET, is a type of metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) used for the switching of electrical current in many application fields. It utilizes enhancement mode for the switching of electrical current, similar to the P-channel MOSFET; electron carriers are drawn away from the source towards the drain in order to switch on the electrical current. Additionally, it relies on the gate voltage to reach the breakdown voltage before conducting.

Features

The BSS138TA features a variety of specifications that make it ideal for many application fields. To begin, it has a very small form factor and is capable of switching high current loads of up to 20V when used appropriately. Furthermore, it has an SV profile making it well suited for high speed switching as it can identify weak signals as well. Last but not least, its blocking-capable voltage can exceed 60V in order to protect the circuit it is used in.

Operation

When it comes to operation, the BSS138TA is equipped with both active and static gate control. At rest, the gate is ‘non-conductive’ and can only conduct when the voltage exceeds the threshold voltage (Vt). Thus, when a current applied from the gate exceeds the threshold voltage, the electron carriers are drawn away from the source towards the drain. This results in a rapid switch between the off and on states. To return it to an off state, the current needs to be removed.

The BSS138TA is popularly used in applications such as relay drivers, logic gates, LED drivers, and in power conversions. It is mostly used in audio amplifiers and power circuits due to its fast response time, low input capacitance, etc. Its working principle lies in controlling and switching electrical current by using the voltage applied on the gate, as mentioned before.
